Changes in helping refugees

Changes in helping refugees

The changes in the law predominantly introduce the necessity to pay part of the costs of accommodation

The draft amendment to the legislation on support for refugees from Ukraine stipulates that from the beginning of March 2023, refugees will be required to pay part of the cost of their stay in collective accommodation. The new legislation assumes that from March, beneficiaries will pay half of the costs of their stay (but not more than PLN 40 per day), and from 1 May 2023 they will pay 75% of these costs (but not more than PLN 60 per day).

Under the new draft, refugees will have to apply for a PESEL number within 30 days. The rules for payment of cash benefits, including 500+, will be changed: citizens of Ukraine will lose the right to receive benefits if they leave the territory of Poland for more than 30 days and before the payment of the benefit the Social Insurance Institution will check whether the applicants are actually staying in Poland

The amendment to the special law also provides for easier crossing of the Polish-Ukrainian border for people who return to Ukraine for a few days, e.g. to handle personal matters. According to the new regulations, the refugee status certificate will entitle to multiple border crossings.
